| Opis awersu | The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield surmounted by the Phrygian cap atop a pike, flanked by an oak branch on the left and a laurel branch on the right. The date appears in the lower portion of the field below the arms. The circumferential legend reads REPUBLICA DE CUBA above and UN CENTAVO below. The coin features an eight-sided (octagonal) security ring on the edge, imparting a distinctive segmented profile. |

Cuba maintained a dual-currency system from 1994 until its formal unification in 2021, running the convertible peso (CUC) alongside the standard Cuban peso (CUP). This centavo belongs to the CUP series — the currency used by ordinary Cubans for subsidized goods and state wages, as opposed to the tourist-facing convertible peso. The practical gap between the two currencies was fixed at 24:1, a disparity that structured daily economic life for nearly three decades before the government collapsed the system in January 2021.
