Belize gained full independence from Britain in 1981, but this coin series began circulating four years earlier under the newly established Central Bank, itself created in 1976 as part of the transition away from the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority. The aluminium composition was a deliberate cost-saving measure — Belize was a small, newly autonomous economy with limited foreign exchange reserves, and aluminium cents were far cheaper to produce than the bronze pieces they replaced.
