Singapore's proof sets of this period were produced specifically for the collector market, with the Monetary Authority commissioning sterling silver versions of circulating denominations that in everyday use were struck in copper-clad steel. The 1-cent in circulation was already a coin people ignored — by the mid-1980s, Singaporeans were routinely refusing them as change. The government formally demonetized the 1-cent piece in 2002, making these proof issues the only survivors of the denomination in any form worth preserving.
KM#49a distinguishes the silver proof from the base-metal business strike KM#49, a separation that matters for set completeness across the 1985–1991 run.
