Liberia's 1847 coinage was the first struck for the newly declared republic, produced in Philadelphia under private contract rather than at the U.S. Mint proper. Pattern pieces in lead were made to test dies before committing to the copper circulation strikes — standard practice for the period, though survivorship among lead trials is predictably low given the metal's susceptibility to oxidation and physical damage over nearly two centuries.
