| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central device comprising a sprig of two detailed maple leaves on a common stem, rendered in high relief with finely engraved veining, as designed by George Kruger Gray whose initials 'K·G' appear to the right of the stem in the field. The denomination '1 CENT' is inscribed in the upper field above the maple leaves, while the date appears to the lower left of the central device and the issuing country name 'CANADA' arcs along the lower periphery. The entire design is contained within a toothed denticle border. |

The omission of "ET IND:IMP:" (Emperor of India) from George VI's titles followed Indian independence in August 1947, but the Royal Canadian Mint faced a practical problem: dies for 1948 had already been prepared with the old legend. The mint used modified 1947 dies — adding a tiny maple leaf after the date as a stopgap — before proper 1948 dies could be cut, making the maple leaf variety a distinct and well-documented type in its own right.
The corrected obverse, dropping the imperial India title, then ran uninterrupted through George VI's death in February 1952.
