George VI's health was in steep decline through this period — he died in February 1952 — and coins bearing his effigy were still being struck for Mauritius in the final years of his reign as the island remained a Crown Colony under British administration. The 1949–1952 dates span the transition from post-war austerity coinage back toward more stable production schedules for colonial dependencies, many of which had seen interrupted or reduced mintage during the war years.
