Jamaica's FAO coinage series was issued under a United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization program that encouraged member nations to mint coins carrying agricultural themes as a form of public messaging around food production. The 1 Cent denomination continued in production well past the point of economic relevance — by the 1990s, inflation had rendered it functionally worthless in daily commerce, yet the mint continued striking pieces through 2002.
The "wide legend" variety is distinguished from the narrow legend type by the spacing of the inscription, a die characteristic documented under KM#64 that separates what might otherwise appear to be a single undifferentiated run.
