Canada's one-cent coin was discontinued in 2013, when the Royal Canadian Mint ceased distribution after calculating that each penny cost 1.6 cents to produce. This oversized silver restrike is part of the RCM's ongoing collector program that revisits retired circulation types in precious metal — a format they have applied to the cent repeatedly since its discontinuation, mining collector nostalgia for a denomination that lost its legal tender status the same year it was killed.
At 157.6 grams of .9999 fine silver, the irony is numerical: the metal value alone dwarfs the face value by a factor of several thousand.
