This oversized silver restrike is part of the RCM's ongoing collector program that revisits retired circulation types in precious metal — a format they have applied to the cent repeatedly since its discontinuation, mining collector nostalgia for a denomination that lost its legal tender status the same year it was killed.
At 157.6 grams of .9999 fine silver, the irony is numerical: the metal value alone dwarfs the face value by a factor of several thousand.
