| Popis rubu | The reverse displays a stylized maple twig bearing two leaves and a seed pod, a design originally created by George Kruger Gray that has appeared on Canadian one-cent coinage since 1937. The denomination CENT appears above the central device, while the four-digit date is positioned to the lower left of the twig. The country name CANADA arcs along the lower periphery, and the designer's initials K·G appear discreetly within the field. The composition is contained within a plain circular border with no additional ornamentation. |

Canada's switch from copper-plated steel to copper-plated zinc for the cent came down to cost and magnet compatibility — the steel planchets introduced in 1997 were themselves a cost-cutting measure, but zinc offered further savings on raw material while still passing through coin-handling equipment designed for non-magnetic stock. The United States had made the same material shift for its Lincoln cent in 1982, and the Canadian switch followed logically from the same economics.
