The Central Reserve Bank of China was established in March 1941 in Japanese-occupied Nanking as the official currency authority for the Wang Jingwei collaborationist government — which makes a 1940 date on this note either a pre-opening issue or a retroactive dating, a discrepancy that has never been fully resolved in the literature. Watson Printing Company was a Shanghai-based firm operating under wartime conditions, and its output for this series is notoriously inconsistent in ink coverage and paper quality.
The extremely small physical size was deliberate for a fractional denomination intended to replace existing coinage in occupied territories, where metal had been requisitioned for the war effort.
