Additional information

Issued for New Caledonia under French administration, this cent was produced during a period when the territory functioned largely as a penal colony — the transportation of convicts from metropolitan France continued until 1897. Circulation needs were modest; the free settler population remained small, and much of the island's economic activity ran through controlled labor arrangements that had little use for small bronze coinage.

KM#3 is the sole cent type for this issuer across the entire nineteenth century.
