| Reverse description | Rectangular field bearing a full-colour reproduction of Katsushika Hokusai's celebrated ukiyo-e woodblock print 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' (circa 1831), from the series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.' The composition depicts a monumental cresting wave with white foam claws curling over three ōkibi (fishing boats) whose rowers brace against the turbulent sea, while the snow-capped summit of Mount Fuji appears diminutively in the right background beneath a pale sky. The colour palette faithfully reproduces the original print's characteristic Prussian blue, beige, and white tones against a warm ochre ground. In the upper left corner, a rectangular cartouche contains the artist's signature and series title in vertical Chinese (kanji) script. |
