The Former Liang was a Chinese regional state that controlled the Hexi Corridor during the chaotic fragmentation following the Jin dynasty's collapse — one of the so-called Sixteen Kingdoms. Zhang Gui, who died in 320, founded the dynasty that his descendants would maintain for another half-century. This denomination continued to be struck and circulated under successive Zhang rulers long after its namesake's death, which partly explains the extended date range attributed to the type.
Hartill 12.1 is among the earliest of the Sixteen Kingdoms cash types, predating the more prolific Northern Wei issues by over a generation.
