| Aversbeschreibung | Cast bronze cash coin featuring the four-character reign title legend 元豐通寶 (Yuanfeng Tongbao) rendered in elegant zhuanshu (seal script), disposed in cruciform arrangement around a central square perforation. The characters read top-to-bottom, right-to-left in the conventional Song Dynasty fashion, with each stroke exhibiting the characteristic rounded, archaic forms of the seal script style. A raised inner rim frames the square hole, and a broader outer rim encircles the coin's flat field, both rendered with clean, well-defined casting. The surface displays an olive-brown patina consistent with aged bronze, with areas of dark oxidation accentuating the deeply incised calligraphic strokes. |

Yuanfeng was the reign era of Emperor Shenzong, who spent it attempting to defend Wang Anshi's sweeping New Policies reforms against a conservative bureaucratic opposition that would ultimately dismantle them within months of his death in 1085. The cash coinage of this period was produced in enormous volume across multiple furnace-mints, with Shenzong's administration actively expanding copper output to fund the reformed state apparatus. Seal script and running script varieties were struck concurrently — a deliberate aesthetic choice that had become conventional by the Northern Song, not an accident of different workshops operating independently.
