Xiangfu Yuanbao was issued during the reign of Emperor Zhenzong of the Northern Song, a ruler better remembered for the humiliating Treaty of Shanyuan in 1005 — which committed the Song to paying annual tribute in silver and silk to the Khitan Liao dynasty. The privately cast examples of this type exist because Song monetary policy was chronically unable to meet coin demand; official output from state furnaces fell perpetually short of circulation needs, pushing local foundries to produce unauthorized copies.
Private casting was technically illegal but sporadically tolerated. The weight deficit on these pieces relative to official issues is the primary diagnostic.
