| Beschrijving voorzijde | Four bold Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged symmetrically around the central square perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional manner: 咸 (top), 通 (right), 豐 (bottom), 寶 (left). The legends are cast in high relief against a flat, unadorned field, framed by a raised inner rim surrounding the square hole and an outer raised border. The characters are well-formed and evenly spaced, reflecting the standard calligraphic style prescribed for Qing dynasty cash coinage. The overall design is characteristic of the Xianfeng reign period issues, with the reign title 咸豐 (Xianfeng) and the monetary inscription 通寶 (Tongbao, meaning 'circulating treasure') constituting the complete legend. |
