Lê Văn Khôi seized the Gia Định citadel in June 1833, holding southern Vietnam against Nguyễn imperial forces until the fortress finally fell in 1835. This zinc cash was struck during that siege — a besieged garrison mint producing currency for a rebellion that, at its peak, controlled six southern provinces. The crescent and dot marks distinguish it from the imperial Trị Nguyên issues it deliberately mimicked, a practical choice when your population already recognizes the coin type.
