The Taiguan Tongbao coinage belongs to the Hongzhi reign of the Ming dynasty, a period when central mint authority over the southwestern provinces was largely nominal. Yunnan in particular had a long tradition of semi-autonomous monetary production rooted in its distance from Beijing and its access to local copper deposits near Dongchuan.
Provincial casting quality varied sharply across this series — some issues show crisp, well-defined characters consistent with official supervision; others betray ad hoc local foundry work. KM#675 sits among the more loosely attributed pieces in the series, with die and provenance distinctions still debated in Chinese numismatic literature.
