Shengzong Yuanbao was issued under Emperor Huizong during the Chongning reign period — the same emperor who would later be captured by Jurchen Jin forces in the Jingkang Incident of 1127, ending the Northern Song's hold on the north entirely. Huizong was himself an accomplished calligrapher, and the seal script rendering on this cash reflects the period's broader court obsession with classical script forms as markers of dynastic legitimacy.
Hartill 16.354 places this among the more readily encountered Chongning types, though condition varies sharply given the economic turbulence that preceded the dynasty's collapse.
