| Description du revers | The reverse presents a plain field with a central square perforation flanked by a raised inner rim, and two Chinese characters positioned above and below the square hole. The character 同 (Tong) appears above the perforation, denoting the Tong'an Mint, while the character 二 (Er, meaning 'two') appears below, indicating the second year of the Shaoxi reign era (1191). The characters are cast in Regular script and are relatively simply rendered. A raised outer rim encircles the reverse field. |

Shaoxi was the reign era of Emperor Guangzong of Song, whose rule was troubled from the start — court factionalism and an increasingly strained relationship with his father, the retired Emperor Xiaozong, defined the period. Iron cash of this reign were struck as a regional supplement to bronze, a practice the Southern Song perpetuated out of chronic copper shortages exacerbated by decades of war with the Jurchen Jin dynasty to the north. Hartill 17.374 specifically identifies the standard-read, Tong-style variety among several distinct casting permutations known for this type.
