Shaosheng was the reign era declared by Emperor Zhezong in 1094 after he assumed personal rule and reversed the conservative policies that had dominated the court during his grandmother Empress Dowager Gao's regency. The coin is a direct artifact of that political reversal — Zhezong reinstated Wang Anshi's New Policies, and the renewed minting program was part of a broader reassertion of reformist governance. Zhezong died in 1100 at around twenty-two, making Shaosheng one of the shorter productive reign eras of the Northern Song.
