| Beschrijving voorzijde | Four Chinese ideograms in kaishu (regular script) are arranged in the traditional cash coin layout around the central square hole, reading top to bottom and right to left: 光 (Quang) at top, 通 (Thông) at right, 中 (Trung) at bottom, and 寶 (Bảo) at left. The characters are boldly cast in relief within the inner field, which is bounded by a raised inner rim surrounding the square perforation. A raised outer rim borders the coin's circumference, and the broad flat field between the inner and outer rims is plain. |

Quang Trung — born Nguyễn Huệ — ruled for barely four years before his sudden death in 1792, yet managed to defeat a Qing Chinese invasion force of roughly 200,000 troops at the Battle of Đống Đa in 1789. His cash coinage was struck under severe resource constraints; the "reduced metal" reverse variety reflects deliberate weight economies imposed on the mint during a reign defined by near-continuous military mobilization. The Tây Sơn dynasty he led never fully consolidated a stable monetary system before his death ended the experiment.
