Zinc cash coins from Minh Mạng's reign occupy an awkward administrative corner of Vietnamese numismatics. The standard issues were cast in brass, but periodic copper shortages — exacerbated by the court's enormous demand for coinage to fund Minh Mạng's aggressive territorial consolidation into Cambodia and Laos — forced the Nguyễn board of revenue to authorize zinc as a substitute. Zinc cash circulated at a discount and were actively resisted by merchants in some provinces.
The alloy corrodes aggressively in humid conditions, which explains why survivors in any presentable state are considerably scarcer than their brass counterparts despite spanning a twenty-one year reign.
