Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) occupying the four cardinal fields. The four-character reign legend reads clockwise from top: 明 (top), 通 (right), 命 (bottom), 閩 (left), following the traditional Vietnamese cash coin convention of top-bottom, right-left reading order. Characters are boldly rendered in relief against a flat field, with a plain outer rim encircling the design. The coin exhibits the characteristic porous surface texture typical of cast zinc issues of the Nguyen dynasty.
