Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform order around the central aperture, reading top-to-bottom then right-to-left: 康 (Kāng, top), 熙 (Xī, right), 通 (Tōng, bottom), 寶 (Bǎo, left), forming the reign title and denomination legend 'Kangxi Tongbao' — 'Precious Currency of the Kangxi Emperor'. The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat, unadorned field, with a plain raised outer rim encircling the entire design. |

The Kangxi Emperor's long reign saw the Board of Revenue (Hubu) and Board of Works (Gongbu) minting simultaneously at Beijing, with provincial branch mints operating under shifting supervisory arrangements throughout. The "Je" or "Zhe" mint mark here denotes Zhejiang province, one of the wealthiest coastal regions and a persistent administrative headache for Qing fiscal planners — its commercial economy generated enormous demand for small denomination cash that Beijing mints alone could never satisfy.
Zhejiang branch mint output varied considerably across the Kangxi period, with documented suspensions tied to copper supply disruptions from Yunnan.
