| Popis líce | Broad raised rim surrounds a flat field centered on a raised square perforation with a prominent border. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square hole: 康 (Kāng) at top, 通 (Tōng) to the right, 熙 (Xī) at bottom, and 寶 (Bǎo) to the left, reading top-to-bottom then right-to-left as is conventional for Qing cash coinage. The original Kangxi Tongbao cash coins were produced across more than twenty provincial mints during the Kangxi Emperor's reign from 1661 to 1722 — one of the longest in Qing history. The Boo-chiowan designation identifies the Board of Revenue mint in Beijing, which operated two facilities distinguished in collector literature as the eastern and western yards. Replicas of this type are produced in substantial numbers for the tourist and souvenir trade, with brass substituting for the period-correct copper-lead alloy.
