The Southern Tang issued this variant of the Kaiyuan Tongbao during the reign of Li Yu, the last ruler of the kingdom, a poet-emperor whose administrative neglect is generally considered a contributing factor to Southern Tang's absorption by Song in 975. The clerical script distinguishes this emission from the vastly more common Tang dynasty prototype — a deliberate stylistic choice that signals local authority rather than deference to the northern coinage tradition.
Li Yu spent his final years under Song custody in Kaifeng, dying in 978, most likely poisoned.
