| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform order around the central hole, read top-to-bottom and right-to-left in Regular script (Kaishu). The legend 嘉定通寶 (Jiading Tongbao) occupies the four cardinal positions within the inner field. A raised circular rim borders the outer edge of the coin, with a flat, undecorated field between the inner and outer rims. |

The Jiading Tongbao series was struck under Emperor Ningzong during a period of mounting pressure from the Jurchen Jin dynasty to the north. Unusually for Song coinage, certain issues within this series were cast with reign-year numerals on the reverse — a dating practice that allows individual pieces to be placed within the thirteen-year span of the Jiading era rather than simply attributed to it. The specific year designation on this piece is consequently more than decorative.
Hartill 17.539 is among the more precisely documented of the dated varieties in this reign.
