| Obverse description | The obverse presents four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in the traditional reading order: top, bottom, right, left around a central square perforation. The characters 光緒通寶 (Guāngxù Tóngbǎo) identify the reign and denomination, reading 'Circulating currency of the Guangxu Emperor.' The boldly cast legends are raised in high relief against a flat, unadorned field. A plain, slightly raised rim encircles the design. The central square hole, characteristic of Chinese cash coinage, is cleanly cut and precisely formed. |
