The Aksu mint was one of several established in Xinjiang following the Qing reconquest of the Tarim Basin in 1759. These frontier mints were supplied with locally mined copper rather than metal shipped from interior provinces, and output quality varied considerably depending on the season and available ore. Aksu coins from the Daoguang period are frequently encountered with irregular casting texture as a direct result of inconsistent alloy preparation at the source.
Hartill 22.652 distinguishes the Aksu issue by its mint mark combination on the reverse — a detail that separates it from the more common Boo-Yuwan metropolitan strikes of the same reign.
