The entire design is enclosed within a pronounced double rim, a distinguishing feature of this variety. Cảnh Thịnh was the reign title of Nguyễn Quang Toản, the last ruler of the Tây Sơn dynasty, who took the throne as a child following his father Nguyễn Huệ's death in 1792. The dynasty was already under pressure from Nguyễn Ánh's southern campaigns throughout this entire issue window, and by 1802 the Tây Sơn state had collapsed entirely — making every coin struck under this title a product of a regime fighting for survival.
The double rim variety, catalogued separately by both Barker and Toda, likely reflects a die preparation choice at one of the northern mints rather than a deliberate policy distinction.
