Bangka Island's tin cash were produced not by any government mint but by the pepper and tin trading companies — the *gongsi* — that functionally administered much of the island's interior during the Dutch colonial period. Bangka held some of the richest alluvial tin deposits in Southeast Asia, and these coins were struck from the same raw material being extracted and exported, giving them an almost circular economic logic.
The Binglang Gongsi, one of several Chinese merchant associations operating on the island, issued these pieces for internal labor settlement with contracted miners.
