Obverse description Four large Chinese characters in traditional regular script (kaishu) are arranged in the classic cash-coin reading order: top, bottom, right, left around a central square perforation. The characters read 保大通寶 (Bảo Đại Thông Bảo), meaning 'Bảo Đại [reign era] current treasure,' referencing the regnal title of Emperor Bảo Đại. The bold, raised characters occupy the four quadrants of the field, with the square central hole forming the focal point of the composition. The flat, unadorned rim frames the design without any additional border ornamentation.
