Obverse description Central field dominated by the quartered heraldic shield of the Order of Saint John, displaying the traditional devices of the Hospitallers. The escutcheon is rendered in a late medieval style typical of hammered coinage of the period. A Latin legend encircles the shield along the outer periphery, interrupted by a small cross at the top. The flan is irregularly shaped, as characteristic of hammered silver coinage of the sixteenth century.
