Obverse description Central shield bearing the personal arms of Grand Master Antoine de Paule, displaying a displayed eagle (or peacock) with three mullets positioned above the escutcheon. The shield is set within a plain inner field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the device, reading from the upper left and separated by pellets and a cross pattée. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hammered coinage of the early seventeenth century.
