Antoine de Paule served as Grand Master from 1623 to 1636, a period when the Order was increasingly dependent on Spanish Habsburg patronage and its naval role against Ottoman and Barbary corsair fleets remained its primary justification for existence. The carlino denomination itself traces to the Angevin coinage of Naples — the name derived from Charles I of Anjou — and its continued use by the Order reflects the deep monetary influence the Kingdom of Naples exerted over Malta's coin types for centuries.
