At the top of the inner circle, the civic arms of Ascoli are displayed. The outer field carries the legend ⸰ S ⸰ EMMID`⸰ D ⸰ ES C V L O, invoking Saint Emidio, the patron saint and first bishop of Ascoli, in uncial Latin script. The beaded border frames both the inner device and the peripheral legend, consistent with hammered silver coinage of the Papal States. |
