Reverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the four letters C, V, L, O are arranged in the form of a cross around a central pellet, referencing the name of the city of Ascoli (ASCVLO) in an abbreviated cruciform device characteristic of medieval Italian communal coinage. At the top of the inner circle, the civic arms of Ascoli are displayed. The outer field carries the legend ⸰ S ⸰ EMMID`⸰ D ⸰ ES C V L O, invoking Saint Emidio, the patron saint and first bishop of Ascoli, in uncial Latin script. The beaded border frames both the inner device and the peripheral legend, consistent with hammered silver coinage of the Papal States.
