The Emperor is depicted wearing the imperial crown and a draped garment, his features rendered with fine detail befitting a state portrait of the period. A circular Ge'ez legend surrounds the effigy, reading 'His Imperial Majesty Menelik, King of Kings of Ethiopia,' with the Ethiopian calendar date (1895 EC, corresponding to 1902-1903 AD) incorporated into the legend.
