Annibale Albani was appointed Cardinal Camerlengo in 1711 and held the office across multiple conclaves, giving him effective temporal authority over the Papal States during each vacancy. The 1740 sede vacante followed the death of Clement XII in February of that year — a pope who had spent his final years blind and largely incapacitated, leaving considerable administrative backlog for the Camerlengo to manage. The conclave that followed was one of the longest of the century, running six months before electing Prospero Lambertini as Benedict XIV.
Copper sede vacante issues were struck as functional currency, not commemoratives. The MIR references 2574/2-4 indicate at least three die pairings documented for this type.
