Clement XIII's pontificate opened under immediate financial strain — his election in July 1758 came just as the Jesuit suppression crisis was accelerating across Catholic Europe, with Portugal having already expelled the order and France moving toward the same. The Papal States' copper coinage of this opening period was struck at Rome under tight fiscal constraints, with the baiocco serving the most basic daily commerce of the city.
The "With year" designation distinguishes this type from the undated issues of the same reign, a cataloguing distinction that reflects actual die changes rather than a minor variation.
