| Obverse description | Central device consisting of the papal arms of Benedict XIV: three vertical columns (pillars) on a shield, flanked by elaborate foliate scrollwork and acanthus-leaf ornaments. The shield is surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys, the symbols of the Holy See. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, reading BENED·XIV P·MAX· with the regnal year numeral. The overall composition is rendered in a bold, Baroque style typical of mid-eighteenth-century Papal coinage. |
