Rama X — Vajiralongkorn — ascended the throne in December 2016 following the death of his father Bhumibol Adulyadej, but Thai coinage bearing his portrait was delayed while the country observed a one-year mourning period. The 2018 start date on this series reflects that gap. Thailand has a long-standing practice of issuing multiple portrait types across a reign, so this "1st portrait" designation is a cataloging distinction that will matter more once subsequent types accumulate.
