'Izz al-Din's long reign — nearly three decades — coincided with the turbulent aftermath of the Black Death and sustained pressure from the Kartid rulers to the north. That a gold tanka was struck at all during this period speaks to the dynasty's residual control over trade routes crossing the Helmand basin.
