Tarquinii was an Etruscan city already in sharp political decline by the mid-third century BC, its independence increasingly nominal under Roman pressure following the wars of the fourth century. These heavy cast bronzes were produced during what was effectively the city's final phase of autonomous monetary production — Rome would render such local issues obsolete within a generation. The survival of examples at this weight reflects burial or hoarding rather than extended circulation.
