Pakistan's first coinage series was struck at the Royal Mint in London and the Bombay Mint, as the new nation lacked its own minting facility in the years immediately following Partition in 1947. The anna denominations presented a particular design puzzle: the crescent's orientation became a point of contention, resulting in two distinct varieties — opening left and opening right — both of which circulated concurrently.
The left-opening crescent on this type is the scarcer of the two in most grades.
