The Amani was introduced as part of Amanullah Khan's sweeping modernization program following Afghan independence from British suzerainty in 1919. The denomination itself was named after him — an unusual act of self-inscription into the monetary system that reflected his increasingly autocratic confidence during the mid-1920s. His reforms, including this coinage, contributed directly to the conservative backlash that ended in the Khost rebellion and, eventually, his abdication in 1929.
Fr#34 confirms this as the Frick-referenced gold type, struck at Kabul with .900 fineness — a standard borrowed deliberately from European practice as Amanullah sought international monetary legitimacy.
