1980 marks the year after the Soviet invasion, and Da Afghanistan Bank continued issuing coinage through the early years of the occupation largely to maintain the appearance of a functioning civilian state. This particular afghani type, introduced under the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, circulated alongside a currency system under severe strain — Soviet aid propped up the government while the informal economy increasingly ran on barter and Pakistani rupees in contested regions.
