Beschrijving voorzijde Central field occupied by the elaborate quartered coat of arms of the Bishopric of Passau impaled with the armorial bearings of the Firmian family, surmounted by a princely crown and flanked by ornate Baroque mantling. The shield displays the distinctive horizontal stripes of Passau in the upper quarters, with the Firmian charges in the lower quarters. A circular legend surrounds the entire composition, with the motto of Prince-Bishop Leopold Ernst Joseph von Firmian inscribed along the periphery. The rim is defined by a finely executed inner border of raised dentilation.

Aanvullende informatie

Leopold Ernst von Firmian served as Prince-Bishop of Passau from 1723 until his death in 1783 — one of the longest episcopal reigns in the see's history. His tenure coincided with significant pressure from Vienna to bring the sprawling Passau diocese, which historically extended deep into Austria, under tighter Habsburg ecclesiastical control. Joseph II would eventually succeed in dramatically reducing Passau's reach in 1784, just one year after Firmian's death.

The 1/8 Thaler denomination was minted in relatively small volumes for episcopal sees of this period, serving primarily local and regional transaction needs rather than broader trade circuits.
